Why did you choose this program?
Program Testimonials
I chose the IES Abroad Santiago Health Studies program, because I am a Spanish major and I wanted to improve my Spanish, but I also wanted to do something related to medicine, because I hope to attend medical school next year. Basically to improve my Spanish and participate in clinical observation in a Spanish-speaking country.

What was your favorite aspect of this program?
Program Testimonials
The staff is extremely friendly and so were the other students (IES students and Chilean students) as well as my host mom. I also enjoyed the opportunity to participate in clinical observation at Sotero del Rio. However, my favorite aspect was probably the ability to travel. IES does not pay for any trips and they only offered one (a trip to Chiloe that was really cool) but Chile is a great place to travel (Atacama, Valparaiso, the Andes, the Lake Region, Patagonia and Torres del Paine, etc.) and there was plenty of time to travel if you look for it. Go somewhere during las Fiestas Patrias in September if you are there in their Spring and stay after the program ends to enjoy it all if you can.

What was your housing situation like?
Program Testimonials
I lived with a host mom, but understand that host families are often older, because they have more time and space in the house, and often can't do much with the students. Don't expect a young active family with children, or you'll probably be disappointed. Still, I loved my host mom. You will only get 2 meals and one will probably be a tiny breakfast that most likely only consists of bread and a little ham and cheese. Don't expect a super close relationship with your host family, but if you end up having one that's even better. Choose a host family for sure. If there really is a problem, it is easy to change housing assignments if you tell someone early. It's all about making the most of the opportunity and being flexible. Don't have expectations.
