Language and Culture Through Study Abroad - Chile

Program Overview
This project offers an opportunity for students who would like to explore study abroad on a smaller scale or for those who cannot spend a semester abroad because of academic or time constraints. The program is located at the University of Viña del Mar in the coastal resort town of Viña del Mar, just outside of Valparaíso. Situated on the central coast of Chile, Viña is nicknamed "The Garden City". Students will study intensive language at the Universidad Vina del Mar and be placed in homestay families for the complete immersion experience. The program will also offer a number of activities including possibilities for service learning as well as excursions in the area of Viña, including visits to Pablo Neruda's homes. There will also be optional trips available which include the chance to canopy, kayak and play Chilean paintball.
CourseworkVina del Mar
Students will enroll in JAN 424 A during Interim. While abroad in Chile, Wofford students will study Spanish at the University five mornings a week with service learning opportunities scheduled in the afternoon. Placements into the correct level of Spanish are made through an entry interview and grammar quiz, and classes are small and encourage participation. Students take one four-credit course intensively during the four-week program. The Spanish course, offered at an intermediate or advanced level, emphasizes language learning through a critical and constant engagement. Spanish class is held daily for four hours.

Completion of 102 or the equivalent in the language is required. All students must go through a rigorous application process and must meet eligibility requirements as stated by the program. This project abroad is graded A-F, and students must complete a full application to the program in addition to the Wofford study abroad application. Final acceptance into the program is contingent upon acceptance by the Universidad Vina del Mar as well as permission from the Wofford coordinator.

Students will be housed with a Chilean family (one student per family). The host family will provide a private room, all meals, and moderate use of laundry facilities and telephone.

Wofford Travel Grants
The Wofford College Travel Grants provide assistance to students who are participating in an Interim Travel/Study program. Financial need and academic merit are the principle considerations in awarding these grants. Please note that an application for a Wofford Travel Grant does not substitute for the Travel/Study project application for Interim.

To be eligible to apply for a Travel Grant, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (except first-year students applying in the fall) and be in good social and academic standing with the College. Awards range from $500 - $1,500. The number of awards granted will depend upon the number of applicants as well as available funds. The award is directly applied to the applicant's program fees. To apply, complete the online Wofford College Travel Grant application.
