Program Description:
Language and Culture Through Study Abroad - China

Program Overview
This project offers an opportunity for students who would like to explore study abroad on a smaller scale or for those who cannot spend a semester abroad because of academic or time constraints. This program, sponsored by CET in Beijing, is designed for students who have studied Chinese for one semester and emphasizes the link between inside classroom study and outside language use. All students live with Chinese roommates and abide by a full-time language pledge. This program is an excellent way to "warm up" for the longer spring term that follows. Valid travel documents and successful completion of Chinese 102 are required.
CourseworkBeijing, China
Students will enroll in JAN 424 C during Interim. While abroad in China, Wofford students will study Chinese at Capital Normal University through CET's Intensive Chinese Language program in Beijing. Students will enroll in one Chinese language course while abroad. Completion of Chinese 102 or the equivalent in the language is required, and language placements will be made by the program. Available Chinese language courses range from Advanced Beginning Chinese through Advanced High Chinese.

The Chinese language classes focus on improving students' Chinese language abilities. Each week, classes revolve around a weekly theme, like Chinese holidays, rural life, or political reform. Homework assignments will introduce students to new vocabulary that can be used in real-life situations. Courses are interactive and provide opportunities for students to practice their Chinese outside of the classroom. Students also take a language pledge while abroad.

All students must go through a rigorous application process and must meet eligibility requirements as stated by the program. This project abroad is graded A-F, and students must complete a full application to the program in addition to the Wofford study abroad application. Final acceptance into the program is contingent upon acceptance by CET as well as permission from the Wofford coordinator.

Students will be housed in a residence hall with a local roommate. The building is for CET students only, away from other foreign student housing. Meals are not included, but students have easy access to the cafeteria or neighborhood restaurants.

Wofford Travel Grants
The Wofford College Travel Grants provide assistance to students who are participating in an Interim Travel/Study program. Financial need and academic merit are the principle considerations in awarding these grants. Please note that an application for a Wofford Travel Grant does not substitute for the Travel/Study project application for Interim.

To be eligible to apply for a Travel Grant, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (except first-year students applying in the fall) and be in good social and academic standing with the College. Awards range from $500 - $1,500. The number of awards granted will depend upon the number of applicants as well as available funds. The award is directly applied to the applicant's program fees. To apply, complete the online Wofford College Travel Grant application.
