Program Description:
Independent Study Interim Travel Registration

Program Overview
Independent interim projects give students an opportunity to develop their own course of study for a given January with the help of a faculty mentor. These projects are rigorous and require a high degree of independence, creativity, and commitment on the part of the student. Such independent study does not include work at an internship. Rather, this independent work involves research, whether of a traditional academic or a more experiential nature, that then results in a final capstone project at the conclusion of January.

Please note the following two restrictions on independent study:
  • Students who are currently on disciplinary probation or who have been found guilty of academic dishonesty will not be allowed to propose an independent project; and
  • First year students may do independent study, but it is expected that such work will be done on-campus or close by in the Spartanburg area.
All students who would like to participate in an Independent Study Interim project must submit an Independent Project Proposal Form by the deadline listed on the Interim calendar. This proposal must be approved by the Interim Committee. Please visit the Independent Study Interim page for more information about this process.

CourseworkFrance
Students will be enrolled in the Independent Study Interim project during January. This project provides 4 credit hours and fulfills the Interim requirement. Students are supervised by their approved faculty sponsor and will work closely with their faculty sponsor prior to departure, while abroad, and upon return.

Accommodation
Students are responsible for finding their own placements and accommodations. These must be approved by the Interim Committee.

Program Costs
Students are responsible for all off-campus accommodations, flights, and fees associated with their Independent Interim project. Students are billed normal tuition and room/board during Interim. In addition, students are charged the Risk Management fee ($110).

Wofford Travel Grants
The Wofford College Travel Grants provide assistance to students who are participating in an Interim Travel/Study program. Financial need and academic merit are the principle considerations in awarding these grants. Please note that an application for a Wofford Travel Grant does not substitute for the Travel/Study project application for Interim.

To be eligible to apply for a Travel Grant, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (except first-year students applying in the fall) and be in good social and academic standing with the College. Awards range from $500 - $1,500. The number of awards granted will depend upon the number of applicants as well as available funds. The award is directly applied to the applicant's program fees. To apply, complete the online Wofford College Travel Grant application.
